YOUTH THEATRE
Weekly theatre classes for students aged 6 to 18

What is youth theatre?

A youth theatre is a club for young people aged 6 to 18 who come together for a theatre and performing arts activity. Through fun and games, we help our students improve their performing skills and teach them to explore and interpret theatre texts, and every year, we produce a play with each group.
Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of experience or ability. Youth theatre is about providing all young people with the gift of enjoying the arts for life.
Our curriculum
Juniors (age 6 - 9)
Trimester 1: September - December
Christmas show

From September to December, we work with our Junior students on creating a show to be performed in December for an audience of their families and friends. We begin building the key skills, such as voice and movement, and prepare our students for what might well be their first ever time performing in a real theatre.

The plays that Juniors work on can vary from fairy tales, to pantomimes, to new child-friendly stories.

Trimester 2: April - June
Group work and performance

For the second part of the year, our students continue building their skills, through a performance that's focused on a specific skill (for example: choral speaking, mime, devising...). They continue to work as a group, learning a new skill together and forging a stronger bond within the group.

Together, they perform their show for parents and families in class.
Trimester 3: March - June
Poetry and individual performance

After they've performed their Christmas show and their mini-show, we take the focus off of group performance and onto individual performance. Following the LAMDA curriculum, we walk our students through the individual performance of poetry, monologues or mime. This helps to build the students' key skills, and allows them to choose from a wide variety of pieces to work on something that's just for them!

Intermediates (age 10 - 13)
Semester 1: September - January
Skill-building and mini show

From September to January, Intermediate students begin by building their skills in class, through theatre games, exercises and focused masterclasses. They will then apply these newfound skills in their first production: their January mini-show, which is presented to parents and families in class at the end of the term.

The mini-show is all about building the team and honing the performance skills of the actors. No props, costumes, lights or sound: the show follows the rules of "Poor Theatre", with the emphasis on the quality of acting and the focus of its performers.

Semester 2: January - June
Intermediates' Show

With the mini-show performed and the group bonded, we prepare for the Inters' big show at the end of the year. Now that their core skills have been honed, students get access to costume, props and all the bells and whistles of a big show.
All the intermediate groups come together to perform one big, full-length show in a big theatre. Each group takes on a section of the play with their teacher, under the guidance of a project director, keeping all the groups going in the same direction. The show is performed twice, giving all parents and families the chance to see it, and giving the students the chance to learn from their first performance and apply their lessons in the second.
Seniors (age 14 - 20)
Semester 1: September - February
EYT Festival

Every year in February, all of our Senior groups compete in a large-scale theatre festival. They get to perform in a professional theatre in front of a large crowd made up of their parents, their friends and families, their fellow students, and members of the wider Brussels theatre scene. Students are also encouraged to watch each other's shows, fostering a sense of community amongst the groups, and allowing them to learn from each other's performances.
During the semester, Senior students build their performance skills with their teacher, learn to take on responsibility for themselves and for their group, and bond as a group, culminating in a thrilling experience as they tread the boards in front of a large audience.

Semester 2: February - June
Skill-building and End of Year Show

After the EYT Festival, our Senior groups start work on their end of year show. This is a smaller show, which they perform to their peers at the Senior party in June. The emphasis here is on fun and skill-building, since we know that Senior students already have more than enough work with school and exams during this time.

The groups also take part in masterclasses during this time: these are classes that focus on specific skills and disciplines, including devising, miming, poetry, physical theatre, trust exercises, and more.
At the end of the second semester, the Seniors all take part in the Senior party, where students perform their shows and find out the winners of the EYT Awards!
Our ethos
We believe in using theatre to help students build their confidence, learn valuable life skills and find themselves through the arts. Theatre is a collective art, built on teamwork, trust and expression. At our classes, young people get the chance to express themselves in a safe and welcoming environment, make wonderful friendships that last for years, and leave us with a lifelong love of the arts. There are three core tenets to our teaching method. Welcomed Everyone is welcome in our group, and there are no exams to pass in order to gain access. We take pride in our group's ability to make new students feel at home very quickly, and we use drama games and exercises to break down the barriers early on, allowing the students to bond and grow together. Challenged We believe in challenging our pupils, and taking them out of their comfort zone. For a young child, that might be as simple as going on stage in front of their parents and friends. For a teenager, that might be tackling difficult issues and themes in a play. It is important to be challenged, to succeed, and sometimes to fail in order to grow. Supported We always support and encourage the student through their challenges. We provide our students with a safe environment where they can explore, converse, and build their confidence.

*Scholarships and discounts
At EYT, we believe that high-quality theatre classes should be available to all children, regardless of their financial background. We understand that our prices may not be affordable to everyone, and since we don't receive any government funding, we can't reduce the fees for all students. We are however committed to offering both full and half scholarships to those students who need them.
Half scholarships
For students who have two parents benefiting from allocations de chômage / werkloosheidsuitkering, we offer one half scholarship place per class. This means that half of the annual fees are waived as long as the family is still receiving benefits. Parents are asked to prove their status each term: this is to ensure that these places go to those who need them.

Full scholarships
For students whose parent(s) benefit from the bénéficiaire d'intervention majorée (BIM) / verhoogde tegemoetkoming status, or a single parent benefitting from allocations de chômage / werkloosheidsuitkering, or a family that has officially recognised refugee status (réfugié reconnu / erkende vluchteling), we can offer a full scholarship place. This means that all fees are waived as long as the family is still receiving benefits. We offer five full scholarship places across the youth theatre. Parents are asked to prove their status each term: this is to ensure that these places go to those who need them.
25% sibling discount
For parents who already have one child enrolled, the second (and any subsequent) child receives a 25% reduction in fees.

If your circumstances aren't covered above, but you still can't afford our fees, contact us and we will try to come up with a solution for your child.
