ABOUT EYT
WHERE IT ALL STARTED
EYT werd in 1999 opgericht door Lynne Vaughan en Mike Cockburn als TIE (Theatre In English / Theatre In Education). Het had aanvankelijk acht studenten en de lessen vonden plaats in de Espace Théâtral Scarabaeus in Schaarbeek. Nu, bijna 20 jaar later, heeft EYT meer dan 100 studenten verspreid over drie leslocaties en richt het zich elk jaar tot honderden kinderen en tieners als het enige Academie van Londen-examencentrum van België.

WAAR HET ALLEMAAL BEGONNEN
EYT werd in 1999 opgericht door Lynne Vaughan en Mike Cockburn als TIE (Theatre In English / Theatre In Education). WAAR HET ALLEMAAL BEGONNEN
DE EERST ENGELSTALIGE JEUGDTONEELGROEP
Toen EYT in 1999 in Brussel aankwam, bestond er niet zoiets als Engelstalig jeugdtoneel in de stad. De enige optie voor jongeren was om lid te worden van Franstalige of Nederlandstalige jeugdtoneelgroepen of auditie te doen voor de paar rolen die beschikbaar waren in de Engelse amateur-dramaturgroepen. Al bijna 20 jaar lang heeft EYT jeugdtoneel beschikbaar gesteld in het hart van Brussel en heeft het een invloed gehad op een radicale verandering in het Engelse theaterlandschap van Brussel.
ERKEND EN GERESPECTEERD
EYT is lid van de National Association of Youth Theatres en is het eerste en enige jeugdtoneelgroep in Brussel dat door de internationale vereniging wordt erkend. EYT is ook de enige jeugdtoneelgroep die regelmatig wordt uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan FEATS, een Europadisch amateurtoneelfestival, en heeft verschillende prijzen gewonnen in de competitie in concurrentie met volwassen groepen.
ERVAREN EN GEKWALIFICEERD
Al onze leraren zijn opgeleid en gekwalificeerd op het gebied van toneel en hebben allemaal professionele credits in de wereld van theater, tv of film. Onze oprichter, Lynne Vaughan, heeft verschillende professionele theaters in het Verenigd Koninkrijk gerund en de credits van de docenten zijn onder meer werken aan professionele toneelproducties in de Londense West End, professionele filmsets en tv-bedrijven. De lerarenopleiding omvat accreditatie van de Academie van Londen (LAMDA) en we proberen constant onze vaardigheden te actualiseren met hedendaagse oefeningen en trainingen. Andere specialistische gebieden zijn kostuum- en propdesign, creatief schrijven, film maken en mise-en-scène.

1999
English Youth Theatre opens as Theatre In English / Theatre In Education (TIE) at Espace Théâtral Scarabeus in Schaerbeek. It initially has 8 students, but soon grows to have a Junior and Senior group.
2001
TIE moves its premises to the Warehouse Theatre in Schaerbeek, and continues to grow, now adding an Intermediate group.
It's here that TIE introduces LAMDA exams as part of its curriculum.
2004
TIE enters a play into the "Festival of European Amateur Theatre Societies" (FEATS). This is an adult festival, with TIE being the only youth theatre group.
In the lift of the theatre, Lynne overhears two women chatting, saying: "Well, we don't know what to expect from the next group, but they're only children."
The performance goes on to win 2 awards at the festival, including Best Original Script and the Adjudicator's Discretionary Award.
2005
TIE moves again, this time for a much longer stay at the Nekkersdal Theatre in Laeken, where it remains until 2016.
2008
With the Laeken group full to bursting, TIE opens a second group in Waterloo. Though it's slow at first, after a couple of years this group reaches 40 students and rivals the main group in Laeken.
This group is still operating today, although it has now moved to Bascule.
2013
TIE changes its name to English Youth Theatre (EYT). At this point, it has over 100 students spread across two centres.
2018
After a brief stay in Wemmel, EYT moves its Brussels group to GC Op-Weule in Woluwe, where it remains to this day with currently more than 90 students.
2020
EYT opens a new Saturday group in the European Quarter, and now has 3 groups running.
During the Covid-19 crisis, we continue to operate online for Inters and Seniors (and in-person for Juniors) through a combination of Zoom classes, webinars, and extra discussions and activities.
2022
The EYT Festival, an annual festival of youth theatre in which all of EYT's Senior groups perform, is launched. The first festival has 7 plays and over 90 Senior students performing. It's still running, with the 3rd edition in 2024 featuring 8 plays and 9 groups.
2023
EYT opens a new teaching centre in Antwerp, at De Nieuwe Vrede in Berchem.
EYT's production of "Chaos" by Laura Lomas places 3rd at FEATS, becoming our joint-highest finish at the adult festival. It also racks up 4 nominations, including one for Best Actress, and gets invited to take part in the UK's National Drama Festival.
2024
EYT officially launches EYT+, the natural evolution of EYT's festival group. In years when EYT is not invited to participate in FEATS, students put together a play to perform for the Brussels am-dram community. In 2024, they perform 'Lord of the Flies' at the Warehouse Studio Theatre in Brussels, and at the Badhuistheater in Amsterdam.
In September 2024, EYT celebrates its 25th anniversary.
